Does Evil Exist?

I was recently told 'there is no such thing as evil', but the person that said this often hurts people with their selfishness and back-biting. Is there such a thing as evil? JJ

Dear JJ, Many of my New Thought contacts are positive thinkers who do not accept the basis of evil in our world, but for me, the rational knowledge of reality is always the most intelligent, most caring and the safest, as this knowledge leads to discernment of what is right and wrong, and helps us to understand ourselves and others. Since the time of Zoroaster and perhaps before, the question of good and evil has been an important subject to discuss, as how can we live in a world which is ethical, comfortable, clean, consistent and caring if we do not accept the difference between good and bad. It is likely that the Essene brotherhood, to which John the Baptist and perhaps Jesus himself belonged, believed in evil by understanding the basis of evil in our world and in the lives of those around us and in ourselves, we can make the world a better place.

There are varying types of evil - the stupid idiot who drives wrecklessly and kills someone on the road has committed an evil act due to the hurt they have caused another person, the self-seeking who tramples on someone to get to the top, an uncaring person who denies their part in hurting another person or the one without conscience who takes from others because they believe they have greater entitlement than others. We can all hurt others, sometimes without thought or knowledge, unconsciously, stupidly, by mistake or by design and therefore we have the potential to be evil. We have a choice therefore, whether to do good or bad. We also have a duty, like the students knew in ancient times, to learn about the ways of humankind, to raise awareness, to speak out against corruption and exploitation, to campaign for what is right in order to make the world more aware and more caring.

Unless we, as a species, learn the difference between good and evil, there is no hope for our world.

Thank you Rasa for your comment. It is good to hear that some spiritual teachers know the difference between good and evil.
Shawn: There were no polarities for the men in the WWI trenches! There were no polarities for people caught up in wars, starvation, cataclisms and whatever else causes great hardship and pain. Most people in this world live on less than £1 per day, without healthcare, without a pain killer for a toothache. Evil condemns these people to suffer while others live in great wealth, with money to burn, to throw away. There is no balance. Some have everything, others have nothing. This injustice is very imbalanced. Injustice is not comparable with a battery. Batteries have no intelligence and cannot make decisions, to steal a purse or to lie.

Of course evil is bad and wrong and in some cases is out of control. Sometimes people can commit an evil act as a mistake, such as by having a car accident. They did not intend to leave someone paralysed from the neck down, it was an accident.

Good is the catalyst to make good grow. A caring parent will help a child to develop skills of caring, will bring caring into the world in society, doing voluntary work, giving to charity, by caring for neighbours and others.
Evil is the catalyst to make evil grow. In the workplace for instance, one person cheating, stealing, lying, causes others to consider doing the same, setting a precedent for others to follow.
Light and dark have little to do with good and evil. However, evil often prefers to hide itself and the light brings transparency, exposing the wrong-doer.

This world operates through the polarities of light and dark, also known as good and evil. It operates through the balancing and unbalancing of them.

Of course evil exists, but not as something "bad" or "wrong" or out of control, and certainly not as a mistake. Good and evil, light and dark, are like the terminals on a battery. They oppose each other, and yet drive a single system with a single purpose.

Darkness is the catalyst to make light grow. Evil is the catalyst to make good grow. It is the resistance that strengthens the soul, growing both us and "God," as we are parts of "God."

When the parts grow, so does the Whole.

I totally agree with the article. I myself study the teachings of Master Ryuho Okawa (the founder of Happy Science) and this is exactly what he teaches and not only teaches but takes action to point out what is good (right) and what is evil (wrong) from the perspective of God.
To eliminate the evil we must first recognise it and then take an action to eliminate it and create a better world.
