How many people do you know with knee or ankle problems? Do you know anyone that never experiences low back pain? Do you suffer from any discomfort or pain in your stomach, back, or lower limbs?
Our world’s struggling economies have affected all of us. Perhaps, you have been fortunate enough to have the same job and home but may be worried if it will last. Your expenses may be increasing while your salary has not. Or, you may be concerned about a family member or friend. Because our mind, body and spirit selves are strongly connected, physical manifestations of our worries do occur.
Yoga, Reiki and other healing techniques have educated many people about the chakra system. Chakras are vortexes of energy in the body. The seven major chakras are located along the body’s center, beginning at the base of the spine and moving to the crown of the head. Each chakra is associated with different physical, emotional and spiritual aspects.
When a person is living a healthy, balanced life, the chakras are open and energy is flowing through the physical body. When problems arise, the chakras may partially close, causing energetic blockages. Or, energy becomes depleted when a life situation demands too much. While one chakra may be involved more than another, all are connected and an energetic imbalance is created.
The first chakra, called the root chakra, is located at the base of the spine. This chakra is greatly affected by job and financial worries. Feelings of security, stability, belonging and self-esteem reside here. In our society, jobs and money have become tightly linked to these feelings. Like a tree, our roots require a strong grounding to the earth, enabling us to weather life’s storms.
When we are hit with a job termination or a house foreclosure, our confidence is truly “shaken to the core.” The foundation of our life is gone.
When these traumas happen, chakra energy centers are greatly affected. The root chakra becomes depleted and tired. This depletion can slow down blood circulation, causing coldness in our feet and hands, and fatigue follows. A lack of motivation, sleep difficulties, and general malaise develops. We become too tired to exercise, circulation slows down more, lower back pain gets worse, feelings of distress prevail – a vicious cycle has begun.
The good news is this cycle can be broken. There are many ways to increase root chakra energies. Sometimes, you just have to make the decision to take healthy steps, whether you feel like it or not. Soon, a healthy cycle replaces the vicious downward-spiraling cycle. You can “get back on your feet” again.
IMPROVING ROOT CHAKRA ENERGY:
Becoming grounded is essential for enhancing and strengthening energy in the first chakra. Here are some practical suggestions:
• Reconnect to the earth – take long walks; sit on the ground; hug a tree, literally.
• Exercise regularly – all physical activity enhances root chakra energies. Make it fun – play tennis, dance, learn yoga or Tai Chi.
• Energize your feet – soak feet in warm Epson salt water; massage your feet frequently; do foot stretches and rotations when sitting.
• Consider an energy healing session – Reiki and other energy healers would love to assist your healing journey.
• Eat root vegetables often – sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, the list goes on.
• Colorize with purpose – wear red and brown clothing; add red and brown colors in your home through candles, pillows, towels.
Most importantly, find support in ways that work for you. Picture a young tree that has survived a major windstorm. It may have to be uprighted, a stake attached to the trunk, branches trimmed, watered and fed with special nutrients. In the same way, we may need to get reestablished, renewed and restored.
It is amazing how many of our sayings and expressions relate to the specific chakras. These sayings can become affirmations that can be repeated during these difficult times. When we are out of work, repeat frequently, “I am strong and stand on my two own feet.” When finances are shaky, say “I am on firm ground.” If self-esteem is low, repeat “I am a valuable being, a beloved child of the earth.” Write your own mantra – it will add to your feelings of confidence and self-esteem!
