During a channelling session recently, I asked Spirit how we can identify less with our physical bodies. I received the following:
“From the moment of the birth of the physical body to the last breath that the body takes, human beings are preoccupied with that body, and it is very difficult to disregard it. It takes up so much of your attention and so much of your time and it has so many needs that is keeps you preoccupied for a large portion of your time, every day, day in, day out.
The only way to loosen your identification with your physical form is through meditation. When your eyes are closed, and you are sitting or lying completely still, you are not thinking about your body at all. You are tuning into God or whoever it is you tune into, when you meditate, or whatever it is you are focusing on during your meditation, you are not focusing on your body then. So regular meditation is important.
But more important even than meditation is a complete and total understanding that whatever happens to the human body, and however sad your loved ones would be if anything did happen to your physical body— if you left the body behind—it isn’t you. You are the eternal, immortal spark that seems to be animating the physical body. When the physical form goes, the eternal spark just carries on in a different dimension.
Now, everyone who studies spirituality knows this, theoretically, but it’s a matter of having faith that this is the truth, and knowing it, so that you really, really don’t worry too much about your physical body. It is difficult when you have dependants, whether it is people or animals (your pets for example), when they rely on you being there to meet their needs, then that is an added dimension and an added difficulty. But when you don’t have dependants one day or pets, you will find that it is actually easier to not focus so much on the body.
Try also, when you are in the garden, to not think about the body. Don’t think about going to eat or drink. Try not to think about that for an hour or two and just be in your environment. Don’t plan to meet future needs of your body. Don’t plan future meals or shopping. Just try to be in the present moment, focusing on anything other than the body, as you do in meditation. Instead, you can do it out in the garden or out in the fields when you are walking. It isn’t easy for any human being to completely dis-identify with the physical form. But the more you are able to do this, the easier your transition will be."
