At the most challenging times in our life it can be very hard to appreciate all the good things that you actually do have. Much of society is not really geared up towards appreciating and reporting on the positive. Take “the news” for instance – it is dominated by what’s NOT going right with perhaps a lighthearted piece at the end of the programme in a poor attempt to balance things out. There are so many positive things happening, in every passing minute around the whole world – but they’re mostly not seen as “news worthy” to be reported upon. Which is a bit of a shame really.
But I digress slightly. Everything that we experience in life can teach us something – whether that’s something about ourselves, other people, the world around us, or how we interact and influence the latter. No moment is a wasted moment when we pay attention to where we are and what we’re doing.
Hands up all those people who don’t enjoy washing up or other housework. Did you put your hand up? Don’t worry if you did or didn’t :-) Just for a moment or two, have a think about all the “mundane” things that you need to do in life such as cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing, shopping, walking the dog, mowing the lawn, completing your tax return and so on. Think about all those tasks that make you inwardly groan about having to do them. Life’s a bitch ain’t it! ;-)
However, perhaps look at it another way. There are people in the world who would be over the moon at actually having a lawn to mow, or having a washing machine let alone the water and electricity to power one! There are people who would be happy to earn enough money to feed their family every day, let alone enough money to complete a tax return.
Do you see, no matter how “bad” or mundane our life may appear to us at times, there are always others in the world who would be happy to step into our shoes. Now this isn’t about provoking a guilt trip in anyone. It’s about making peace with where you are right now. About appreciating the opportunity to undertake all those mundane tasks. As an aside, there’s also an element here about respecting and nurturing yourself – do you love yourself enough to want to keep your clothes clean, look nice, and feel good?
It is when we make peace with our lives, and when we appreciate all the opportunities we do have, that our life can really change. Rather than moaning about having to pay the electricity bill – instead appreciate that you have electricity in the first place.
Make peace with where you are now, and then your life can move on. Remember, the better we feel about our lives the more positive experiences we attract and create for ourselves and the world around us. Now go do that washing up :-)
